GENERAL FUNCTION The primary function of the Director of Campus Recreation and Wellness (CRW) is to provide leadership and management of the activities, services, and operations of the department. The Director oversees recreation and wellness programs and services to enhance the total student experience and supervises the operations of the department, including intramural recreational sports, club sports, fitness, wellness, aquatics, outdoor programs, the Campus Recreation Center, the Catamount Disc Golf Course, Reid Pool, the WCU Multi-use Trail system, the Team Development Course, and the Campus Recreation and Wellness recreation fields.
The Director of Campus Recreation and Wellness works within the Division of Student Affairs Health and Wellness Unit to provide intentional collaboration with Counseling and Psychological Services, Health Services, and Health and Wellness Education for the promotion of overall campus wellness to a diverse campus population to encourage students to stay informed, involved, healthy, and well.
The Director of Campus Recreation and Wellness participates in long-range planning and implementation of programs and services, student fee stewardship, data and assessment, division and institution compliance, and assumes other responsibilities as directed by the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs – Health and Wellness.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Establishes and implements short and long-range goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures for the department. Collects data and information to monitor and evaluate operational effectiveness, implement changes required for continuous improvement. Develops and/or completes reports to tell the story of Campus Recreation and Wellness to university administration or other campus constituents.
Develops and leads an efficient department by supervising administrative, professional, graduate, and student staff and establishing a wide variety of high-quality, comprehensive recreational sports, outdoor activities, and fitness and wellness programs that encourage a healthier lifestyle and enhance the quality of life for the entire campus community.
Manages the $1,200,000+ budget, provides accountability for the collection of fees/ monies and purchases by reviewing daily deposit reports and reconciliation of monthly financial statements provided by the Business Services Coordinator.
Develops and implements a department capital improvement program, while reviewing and assessing existing facilities’ care and maintenance for effective facility operations and optimum utilization of Campus Recreation and Wellness facilities.
Promotes student development with direct oversight of the practice of hiring, supervising, and training of all Campus Recreation and Wellness student workers.
Supports the Associate Director for Campus Recreation and Wellness with oversight of development and implementation of a health and safety program that includes CPR, First Aid and Lifeguard certifications, a comprehensive fitness program that includes Group Exercise classes, Personal Training programs, collaborative wellness programming, and management of both the Campus Recreation Center facility operations and Reid Pool.
Supports the Associate Director for Intramural Recreational Sports and Club Sports with oversight of development and implementation of a comprehensive sports program for the campus community including a variety of Intramural Recreational Sports offerings, a comprehensive Club Sports program, and the management of Campus Recreation and Wellness fields.
Supports the Associate Director for Outdoor Programs with oversight of development and implementation of a comprehensive outdoor program for the campus community including a variety of outdoor trips and workshops, the management of the WCU Multipurpose Trail, outdoor equipment rentals and equipment maintenance, climbing wall operations, and Team Development Course operations.
Promotes Campus Recreation and Wellness information and policies to the campus community by overseeing marketing, department publications, and the department website, while ensuring university branding and marketing compliance.
Manages department compliance with a variety of policies and procedures including, but not limited to, asset management, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, Payment Card Industry standards, Automated External Defibrillator management program, purchasing procedures, human resources practices, donation procedures, and outdoor permit use.
Responsible for the maintenance of, changes to, and distribution of Emergency Action plans and Continuity of Operations plans for the department.
Demonstrates a culture of wellness by developing co-sponsored or collaborative programs and strong relationships with other campus departments, including, but not limited to, Health Services, Health and Wellness Education, Counseling and Psychological Services, Residence Life, Campus Activities, Greek Student Engagement and Development, Registered Student Organizations, Orientation, Admissions, Athletics, and other campus constituents.
Facilitates knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to promote a diverse and inclusive work environment.
Maintains current field competency through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts, attending professional development courses/conferences, training and/or courses encouraged by the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs – Health and Wellness.
Contributes to an effective health and wellness unit in support of the division and university mission by completing special projects and performing other duties assigned by the Associate Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs – Health and Wellness.
SUPERVISION Supervised by the Associate Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs – Health and Wellness, the director supervises three Associate Directors, three Assistant directors, a Business Services Coordinator, two Building and Environmental Service Technicians, one Facility Maintenance Technician, Graduate Coordinators, Student Workers, and other temp/hourly employees. The Director makes recommendations in the hiring, advancement, termination, and other changes in status of those supervised.
REQUIREMENTS Education: A Master's degree in Recreation, Business, Management, Higher Education Student Affairs, or a related area is required.
Experience: At least three years of successful administrative experience in higher education is required. Requires experience in recreational programming on the college or university level including the development and implementation of successful programs, working with small and large groups of students in intramural sports, fitness, wellness, aquatics, and outdoor programs, managing a large budget, managing campus recreation facilities and successful campus-wide events, and supervising professional and student staff.
Skills: Requires exceptional organizational, management, leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. Computer literacy is required.
License: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with Automated External Defibrillation (AED) and First Aid certification are required.
Other: The scope of the job occasionally requires attendance at evening and/or weekend activities, meetings, seminars, workshops, and conferences.
