INSTITUTION/DEPARTMENT: University of Houston is a Tier One institution with over 47,000 undergraduate and post graduate students enrolled. This campus is considered to be one of the most diverse student populations in the nation. The Department of Campus Recreation has an indoor facility that contains five basketball courts, five volleyball courts, a Multi-Activity-Court for indoor soccer, in-line hockey, team handball, badminton and tennis. The quarter mile suspended track surrounds all of the courts, one of the largest indoor climbing walls in Texas, as well as a 24,000 square foot fitness zone containing strength and cardio equipment. The 70-meter indoor pool contains a competitive diving well and floating bulkheads. Included in the outdoor leisure pool is a slide, sand volleyball court and plenty of deck space. FACILITY OPERATIONS POSITION: The Facility Operations Instructional Assistant will perform a variety of duties to support the Operations Team in the daily operations and management of all Campus Recreation Facilities. This individual will maintain a high level of customer service, risk management, professionalism, and respect. This individual must use problem-solving skills and delegate duties to maintain a safe and effective environment for participants and staff. It is expected that IA’s work at minimum 20 hours per week. Working mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays is required at times throughout the year to ensure operational and departmental needs are met. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: - Provide assistance in the supervision and daily operations of the 264,000 square foot Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, two outdoor field complexes, and tennis courts
- Supervise Operations Staff (ID Check & Equipment Check-Out) to include recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating
- Manage bi-weekly student payroll using a computer-based time-keeping system
- Work with Operations Staff to develop their leadership, management, customer service, and evaluation skills on a daily basis
- Develop and execute a series of staff and patron audits as it pertains to customer service and policy violations
- Develop and maintain a budget for the Operations Staff payroll and equipment check-out
- Oversee and manage the Equipment Check-Out Center to include inventory control and purchasing of equipment
- Develop and execute fall and spring student staff trainings and monthly meetings for the Operations Staff
- Work with the Assistant Director to fully utilize Fusion, Connect2, and EMS scheduling software in daily operations
- Assist with facility scheduling and reservations
- Assist with management of on-site special events: demonstrate and lead staff in set-up and take-down processes, provide event supervision, and technical support and evaluation
- Develop important communication tools for professional and student staff as well as members and guests to ensure that information pertaining to facility hours, facility updates, events, outside reservations, and departmental activities is disseminated accurately
- Complete statistical reports regarding daily usage of facility space, and accidents and incidents in the facility
- Conduct indoor and outdoor facility inspections to identify facility maintenance and safety concerns and repair where able
- Assist in the oversight of fitness floor inventory and repair and replacement plan
- Implement/enforce departmental policies and procedures
- Uphold risk management standards that include obtaining appropriate certifications, updating documentation, and instructing safety courses and trainings
- Actively serve on at least two departmental committees
- Serve as contributing member of the professional staff and the recreational sports profession by participating in goal setting and long-range planning, attending conferences, and preparing presentations and proposal
- Special projects and other duties as assigned
Specific Qualifications: Experience in facility operations, reservations and events, or informal recreation preferred. Minimum requirements are at least one year of experience working in a leadership or supervisory capacity within a recreation or fitness center. Strong written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated leadership skills as well as the ability to adapt in a fast changing environment are also desirable. Team oriented ideals, willingness to work hard, and a desire to learn is important in this position. MARKETING POSITION: For two years, this professionally minded individual will help the Assistant Director, Marketing and Communications in the daily coordination and management of a comprehensive campus recreation marketing program. Direct responsibility will be determined by an individual’s skill set, as well as the needs of the Department. Evening and weekend hours will be required. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: - Recruit, hire, train, supervise, schedule and evaluate student staff up to 20 students
- Edit graphic designers and videographer’s work
- Organize learning opportunities for student staff
- Organize community outreach at campus organizational events
- Oversee Basecamp, including assigning tasks and keeping to deadlines
- Assist in the development, implementation and assessment of marketing plan and goals
- Track, evaluate marketing strategies and provide recommendations for improvement
- Monitor department website for accuracy
- Create, assess and analyze social media content, while engaging with followers
- Contribute to weekly news briefings for CoogNews, department calendar and Alumni newsletter
- Research, purchase and create marketing plan for promotional items
- Build relationships with Professional Staff to satisfy marketing needs
- Attend and assist with special events and assist with special projects
- Serve on departmental committees
- Uphold risk management standards, obtain First Aid/CPR/AED and instructor certifications, maintain documentation, teach certification courses and facilitate monthly in-services
Specific Qualification: Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Advertising, Graphic Design, Business, Communications or related field and official acceptance into a University of Houston graduate program. Strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as demonstrated leadership ability are required. Knowledge of Adobe products- Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Dreamweaver- required. Must have team-oriented ideals, a willingness to work hard and a desire to learn. |
