The Assistant Director for Student Leadership and Involvement (Recreation) reports to the Director of Student Leadership and Involvement (SLI) and serves as a member of the Director of SLI's leadership team. The Assistant Director (AD) shares in the comprehensive development and management of SLI and supports the mission of Student Success and The New School. The Assistant Director oversees the development, implementation, and assessment of campus-wide recreation including, club sports, group fitness, personal training, outdoor adventures, and intramural sports. This position also supports special events connected to student development, leadership, and involvement for a population of 10,000 students. Additionally, the Assistant Director oversees all recreation operations, including space management, contracts, transportation, and risk management policies. Furthermore, the Assistant Director manages Gnarls the university's mascot, including campus-wide appearances and coordination of student mascots. This position directly supervises and provides on-going training and development opportunities for eight Fitness Instructors, two Club Sports Coaches, and eight Student Staff. This is a full-time, 12-month position that requires flexible hours as well as evening, weekend and overnight hours.
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Serves as a member of the Student Leadership and Involvement (SLI) leadership team and assists in the development, implementation, and assessment of SLI's and Student Success's mission and priorities.
Oversees the development, implementation, and assessment of campus-wide recreation including, club sports, group fitness, personal training, outdoor adventures, intramural sports, and directly manages the ticketing for sporting events.
Develops and manages all aspects of the five (5) club sport team operations, including hiring and management of coaches, sports schedules and events, practices, facility rentals, travel arrangements, officials, and athletic trainers.
Develops and manages all aspects of the innovative intramural sports leagues including facility rentals, permits, equipment and game management, in response to student interest.
Develops and manages a comprehensive outdoor adventure program, including staff management, admission tickets, transportation, advertising, and event registration.
Develops and manages the group fitness program, including the scheduling, instructors and/or personal trainers for daily classes/appointments.
Collaborates on the development and implementation of SLI campus-wide events connected to student development, leadership, and involvement.
Oversees all aspects of Narwhal mascot management including hiring and training student staff and scheduling appearances at events and activities.
Manages financial operations for the recreation area of approximately $110K, including bi-weekly payroll, event registrations and ticketing, and team expenses while maintaining compliance with university procurement policies and procedures.
Oversees all recreation operations, including space management (residence hall gyms, group fitness room, and prayer/meditation room), partnerships with New York City rented facilities, and risk management policies, process, and protocols for all activities.
Collaborates with the Student Success' Communication Team to enhance and implement recreation marketing and communications.
Provides direct supervision and on-going development opportunities for 18 part-time staff, including one (1) Basketball Coach, one (1) Soccer Coach, eight (8) fitness instructors, and eight (8) student staff.
Participates in university-wide and large-scale SLI events, Block Party, Orientation, Welcome Week, Family Weekend, and Commencement.
Engages a diverse student body and staff in fostering a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive environment that promotes connection to campus life, while maintaining high-levels of customer-service for students and campus partners.
Serves on divisional and university committees and leads projects as required.

Master's degree and two (2) to four (4) years of progressive experience in higher education, sports management, or a closely related field.
Demonstrated experience with college recreation, including club sports, group fitness, personal training, outdoor adventures, intramural sports, and special events planning.
Applied understanding of student development or sports management theories, including the impact of student involvement and recreation on student success.
Experience hiring, supervising, developing, motivating a diverse staff team.
Experience with fiscal management.
Demonstrated collaboration skills with the ability to work well with diverse populations (community members, faculty, staff, and students).
Multicultural competence and a demonstrated commitment to diversity in all forms.
Ability to manage multiple collaborative projects and systems in a fast-paced environment.
Excellent organizational and analytical skills.

CPR/AED & Wilderness First Aid Certification. Or upon employment.

Previous experience at an urban and/or arts-focused institution.
Experience with risk management policies and best practices.
Experience with Campus Labs Engage platform.
Experience using TouchNet for ticket sales event management.
Experience leading outdoor adventures with students such as hiking, camping, kayaking, and rock climbing.
