The Assistant Director for Fitness oversees comprehensive student-oriented fitness programming on the Homewood campus of Johns Hopkins University. Key aspects of management include drop-in group fitness and wellbeing classes, personal training services, and informal fitness opportunities. Based in the Ralph S. O’Connor Recreation Center, the fitness director is a twelve month, full time position.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage the O’Connor Recreation Center’s fitness areas, including the fitness room, weight room, stretch areas, Jungle Gym, F45 franchise, and two multi-purpose studios.
Manage the day-to-day operations via policies, programming, and staffing for personal training and group fitness & wellbeing programs.
Specify, purchase, inventory, and manage the preventative maintenance of all fitness equipment for recreational facilities.
Assist the Director of Recreation with purchasing/ procurement, equipment layout, and programming needs for the Recreation Center building expansion opening in 2021.
Create, facilitate, and oversee the drop-in group fitness and wellbeing class schedule.
Manage personal training services and special events.
Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate group fitness and wellbeing class instructors, class monitors, personal trainers, and other applicable student staff and independent contractors.
Implement and instruct in-service training, workshops, and certification opportunities for personal trainers & group fitness and wellbeing instructors.
Collaborate with the university community on overlapping health and/or student experience areas, including committees and programs such as the Wellness Work Group and various campus Health and Wellness collaborative programming such as First Year Orientation, and advise relevant student groups such as the Lifestyle Fitness Club and/or Powerlifting Club.
Bachelor's degree required.
Three years professional experience managing a collegiate recreational fitness program required. Two year Graduate Assistantship in Fitness or related fields will be considered as 1 year professional experience.
Nationally accredited personal training certification with a second certification in group fitness instruction preferred.
Masters in exercise science or related field is preferred.
Current CPR/AED, First Aid certification Preferred.
SPECIAL SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
Experience in personal training and managing a personal fitness training program.
Ability to instruct multiple genres of group fitness classes (i.e. Yoga, Kickboxing, Spinning, Pilates, etc.).
Ability to implement dynamic and motivating fitness programming.
Ability to supervise groups of diverse, high-achieving, and highly intelligent individuals.
Ability to market programs effectively to diverse student populations using social media, website, and other direct resources and methods.
Ability to assess and solve risk.
