The Assistant Director of Facility Operations will support the Director of Campus Recreation in the overall management and operation of University of Colorado Colorado Springs Campus Recreation facilities and trails. Responsible for the leadership, development, evaluation, and expertise in facility management and maintenance of the day-to-day operations for Campus Recreation. This position provides leadership for the development, implementation, and assessment of facility operations short- and long-term objectives including strategic planning, budget development and management, policy and procedures, facility coordination, equipment lifecycle planning, risk management, and program performance standards/evaluations. The Assistant Director of Facility Operations position supervises the Program Coordinator of Facility Operations and Program Manager of Aquatics and Safety with oversight of 65+ student employees.
The incumbent provides senior leadership for the department as a member of the senior leadership staff and serves as the primary expert in recreation facility and trail operations and management. The successful candidate will promote and cultivate an environment that values inclusiveness and diversity, engage in evidence-based decision-making, and promote student development and learning while supporting the mission and values of the department.

Leadership and Program Management
- Leads/directs the research, strategic planning, development, financial management, facility, and equipment needs, risk management, and assessment of the delivery of the department’s facility operations, UCCS trail system, aquatics center operations, and safety program.
- Responsible for the leadership oversight, development, implementation, management, reporting, and evaluation of program budget including but not limited to revenue, payroll, and operation expense totaling $800,000.
- Responsible for the leadership oversight and supervision and daily operations of the Gallogly Recreation and Wellness Center (97,085 square feet center), Aquatics Center (four 25-yard lap lanes, leisure area with vortex pool, water slide, and 20-person hot tub/spa), Alpine Field, and UCCS Trail
- Provides leadership and oversight of all Campus Recreation facilities (Gallogly Recreation and Wellness Center including Aquatics and SOLE Centers, Trail System, Alpine Field) maintenance, custodial, grounds, and construction projects in partnership with Facility Services and Planning, Design, and Construction.
- Develop project estimates, schedules, plans, and drafts specifications for assigned projects; provides information and quotes for requisitions, and bids for purchases, repairs, and replacement.
- Construct a database of all Facility Services and Planning, Design, and Construction projects completed throughout facilities, manages inventory control, and established archiving system of all building maintenance.
- Leads the coordination, implementation, and evaluation of the Campus Recreation Department facility capital and non-equipment inventory, replacement plans, and surplus/disposal in accordance with federal, state, and university guidelines.
- Provides recreation facility operations leadership and direction in creating positive leisure and informal recreation opportunities for student participation and development incorporating a focus on healthy behaviors and individual/team well-being while supporting equity, diversity, and inclusion values.
- Leads the management of UCCS campus trail system planning, design, construction, and maintenance in accordance with the Recreational Trails Micro Master Plan.
- Identify and establish a priority of future trail projects based on trail conditions, campus needs, and available resources.
- Interface with local and regional land managers to coordinate trails and open space
- Identify and seek donors and grants to further develop campus trail
- Manage a current GPS database of all trails, trails use (counts), and maintenance log of current and future needs.
- Inspect the campus trail system and identify areas in need of work, improvement, closure, restoration, or rerouting.
- Maintain, inventory, and purchase tools and materials for trails
- Identify, procure, and coordinate the installation of educational, directional, and interpretive campus trail system signage.
- Serves as a liaison between campus faculty, staff, students, facilities, risk management, contractors, and key community stakeholders for the development of an integrated and sustainable campus trails
- Liaison to the UCCS faculty and students to identify available campus trail system educational, practicum/intern, and volunteer opportunities.
- Facilitate the Recreational Trails Advisory Committee that assists with guidance and direction of the campus trail system.
- Provides oversight of building access including Fusion software, security door controls, and security camera systems.
- Assists the Program Coordinator of Facility Operations in maintaining guest locker and towel rental, department facility schedules and coordinating access as well as updating facility reservation procedures as necessary.
Personnel Management and Student Development
- Provides leadership and direct supervision of two professional staff members including planning, assigning, and reviewing work.
- Oversees 65 student employees with direct supervision of 5-10 including trails
- Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, mentors, schedules, assigns responsibilities, and evaluates student
- Manages payroll for direct reports with the facility operations and maintain payroll
- Completes annual evaluations and present coaching and development opportunities throughout the evaluation period to direct reports.
- Coordinates, implements, and evaluates student employee outcome-based trainings, meetings, and professional development opportunities.
- Acts in accordance with department and university student employment and human resources guidelines, policies, and procedures.
- In collaboration with Program Coordinator of Facility Operations and Program Manager of Aquatics and Safety, works to advocate for and create facility and aquatic/safety internship and practicum opportunities for students.
Fiscal and Resource Management
- Responsible for the leadership oversight, development, implementation, management, reporting, and evaluation of facility operations, trails, and aquatic and safety program budgets including but not limited to revenue, payroll, and operation expenses.
- Provides short and long-range planning and fiscal management related to facility and trail operations and aquatics and safety administration.
- Manages and maintains budget in accordance with department, division, and university guidelines and policies to ensure prudent stewardship of resources.
- Ensures that business functions employ best management practices and are consistent with department and university standards.
- Provides oversight and coordinates use of department equipment including purchasing, inventory, maintenance, and replacement planning within industry and manufacturing guidelines.
- Works collaboratively with Director and business office to regularly assess appropriate fee
- Recommends operating and capital reserves projects/purchases by providing research and assessment relevant to area needs and product availability.
Risk Management
- Facilitates and maintains emergency policies and procedures for department facility and trail
- In partnership with the Director of Campus Recreation reviews and updates COOP and department emergency action plans.
- Maintains current records of facility operations equipment as it relates to mandated safety
- When emergency situations arise, serves as a first responder, utilize necessary communication, and provide care in accordance with certification perimeters.
- Recommends policies and procedures that protect the health and safety of our
- Collaborates with department staff and external partners on decisions related to healthy and safe playing conditions at Campus Recreation facilities.
- Responsible for the administration of the department injury/accident and incident reports including documentation, outcomes, and archiving.
- Provides leadership in the development, training, updates, and evaluation of the department Emergency Action Plan (EAP).
- Administers a facility safety audit program designated as a consistent review and notification of necessary facility work orders, risk management concerns, and building service needs to
- Ensures that Campus Recreation facilities comply with state health code standards and are prepared for inspections.
Promotions and Marketing
- In collaboration with the Manager of Membership and Marketing and the Student Marketing Team, advertises and promotes facility membership access, rentals, and open/informal recreation across
- Reviews facility and trail website information and marketing materials created by the Student Marketing Team for updated and accurate content.
- Collaborates with the Manager of Membership and Marketing and the Student Marketing Team in recommending marketing strategies to promote facility and trail operations and rentals.
Administrative Duties
- Responsible for monitoring, compiling, organizing, and analyzing facility and trail operations data collection and reporting, including but not limited to, learning outcomes, assessment plans, and annual
- Leads the identification, development, application, and evaluation of guidelines, policies, and procedures related to facility and trail operations in accordance with industry standards and department and university guidelines.
- Serves on assigned departmental and University committees to support the mission, vision, and core values of Campus Recreation.
- Attends professional development conferences, workshops, seminars, and advocates for professional development throughout the department to stay abreast of current trends and industry standards.
- Participates in the development of ideas and suggestions for program, facility, and service
- Position is required to attend Campus Recreation classes and/or programs and use various facilities and equipment periodically to ensure that they are meeting or exceeding department and industry standards and risk management guidelines.

Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required Recreation Administration, Sport Management, Higher Education, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Minimum of five (5) years of professional experience that includes the following:
- Administration, implementation, and evaluation of facility operations and management (i.e., recreation centers, athletic fields, trail systems, and aquatic center).
- Demonstrated fiscal management experience including budget development and
- Demonstrated experience in event management, including organizing, facility scheduling, mitigating risk, implementing, and evaluating facility operations.
- Demonstrated experience in supervising, advising, training/development, and evaluating of professional staff.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in a field appropriate to the
- Six (6) years or more of professional experience that includes the following:
- Administration and implementation of a collegiate facility operations and management (i.e., recreation centers, athletic fields, trail systems, and aquatic center).
- Demonstrated fiscal management experience including budget development and
- Demonstrated experience in event management, including organizing, facility scheduling, mitigating risk, implementing, and evaluating facility operations.
- Demonstrated experience in supervising, advising, training/development, and evaluating of professional staff.
- Management of trail system planning, design, construction, maintenance, and
- Demonstrated experience with online data and scheduling management system(s).
- Demonstrated experience in contracting, procurement, and
- Experience with designing, implementing, and analyzing student learning outcome assessments and utilizing results to inform area planning.
- Certified Facility Manager Certification and/or Facilities Management
- Certified Pool Operator (CPO) and/or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO).
- Professional Trail Builders Association experience/certifications.
