Under the supervision and direction of the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation for Outdoor Adventures, the Coordinator of Outdoor Adventures will serve on a team responsible for the daily operation and management of Outdoor Adventures programs and facilities. Campus Recreation is a department within the division of Student Affairs that provides recreation and wellness programs to the campus community through the operation and administration of the following: IM Building, McCoy Natatorium, Stone Valley Outdoor Recreation Area, Tennis Center, White Building, Hepper Fitness Center, Outdoor Adventures, Aquatics, Club Sports, Fitness and Wellness Programs, and Intramural Sports. Campus Recreation is comprised of 53 full-time staff and more than 900 student staff members.
Areas of responsibility include Outdoor Trips, Indoor and Outdoor Climbing, Challenge Course, and Rental Center. Job responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
Leading outdoor trips and trainings
Managing and overseeing a comprehensive indoor and outdoor climbing program
Assisting with oversight and delivery of risk management protocols and practices
Recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising up to 45 Outdoor Adventure staff
Planning, guiding and successful leadership of student development opportunities and experiential learning through the outdoor environment for student staff
Assisting with management of daily operations in the rental center
Collecting usage/participation data to assist in preparation of monthly, semester, and annual reporting
Assisting with the preparation of annual budget and participation in responsible stewardship of allocated funds
Ongoing assessment of current programs and development of new initiatives and opportunities
This position typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher and 2+ years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Master's degree in recreation management, outdoor education, or a related field is preferred.
Knowledge of collegiate outdoor recreation programs including outdoor trips, indoor climbing, challenge courses, and equipment rental as demonstrated through experience in a collegiate setting is preferred.
Experience managing climbing wall operations (including lead climbing and route setting) and leading outdoor climbing experiences is required.
Additional leadership experience with other outdoor trip activities such as backpacking, caving, paddle sports, mountaineering, ice climbing, fly fishing, mountain biking is preferred.
Certification as a Climbing Wall Instructor and/or Single Pitch Instructor (or willingness to obtain within 6 months of hiring) through the AMGA or PCIA is required.
Current Wilderness First Responder/CPR certification is required.
This position requires independent work on assignments, while reviewing progress and updating the Assistant Director as appropriate. Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication (oral and written) skills are essential. Must be able to manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines. Attention to detail and good judgment are vital requirements. The successful candidate will have the willingness to lead and work in a team-based environment as well as an eagerness to support and engage with all departmental and Student Affairs initiatives and efforts. Required to take initiative and have flexibility to adapt to shifting workload demands. The ability to foster a positive climate among a diverse group of staff, student employees and participants is essential.
This position requires the following clearances: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.
