Student Affairs at The University of Illinois Chicago is seeking a Campus Recreation Coordinator (Climbing and Outdoor Adventure Coordinator) to join the Campus Recreation team.
The Climbing and Outdoor Adventure program consists of four primary areas: Climbing wall, Outdoor Adventure Trips and Education, Equipment Checkout and student staff development, training, and education.
Essential Functions Include (but not limited to): Administrative
Manage day-to-day office operations.
Recruit, hire, train staff for climbing wall attendants, team building and trip facilitators.
Evaluate staff to meet departmental and organizational needs.
Plan, assign and review work of staff to ensure that group objectives are met.
Train staff on climbing techniques, client communication, and safety requirements and University policies relating to Campus Recreation.
Manage the scheduling of staff, rentals, climbing classes, and trips.
Conduct demonstrations and train clients on various climbing techniques and safety precautions.
Check wall and related equipment at the beginning of, and throughout each shift, ensuring everything is in proper condition to provide for safe climbing sessions.
Evaluate current and future equipment needs based on current conditions and submit requests for new equipment to manager.
Oversee a comprehensive Outdoor Adventure and Adventure Education Program.
Make regular suggestions related to new climbing courses.
Schedule and implement adventure-related workshops and trip offerings for UIC students.
Generate revenue through Teambuilding and Rock Wall rentals including parties, corporate groups, student organizations, etc
Establish and monitor budget revenue and expenses
Request and purchase approved equipment and supplies
Establish program and staff learning outcomes, assess and report
Wilderness First Responder (WFR) Certified
Must be able to train, plan, lead, and supervise individuals in various outdoor activities and settings
Extensive knowledge of specific activities and skills in backpacking, canoeing, whitewater kayaking, rock climbing, orienteering, and spelunking
Understanding of risk management principles and industry standards in outdoor recreation
Certifications from any of the following organizations:
AMGA (American Mountain Guides Association)
PCIA (Professional Climbing Instructors)
LNT (Leave No Trace)
ACA (American Canoe Association)

1. Any one of the following, from the categories below:
A) Master’s degree in a field relevant to the position (e.g., Kinesiology, Sports Management, Exercise Science, Recreation, or closely related field) OR B) Final semester or completed Graduate Assistantship with campus recreation or similar department performing duties for two (2) academic years consistent in area of specialization inherent to the position. * OR C) Bachelor’s degree in a field relevant to the position (e.g., Kinesiology, Sports Management, Exercise Science, Recreation, or closely related field AND One (1) year (12 months) of work experience in the promotion, design, development, and/or administration of recreational programs. OR D) 4 years (48 months) of work experience in promotion, design, development, and/or administration of recreational programs, intercollegiate athletics, campus recreation, park district or similar organization that provides similar program.
2. Demonstrated experience in the delivery of outdoor programming and/or operation of adventure facilities (eg: indoor rock climbing wall, high/low ropes courses, etc.).
*Note: Students in the final semester of a Master’s Degree program, may be allowed to complete a credential examination and will receive full consideration, including being interviewed. An offer may be extended with understanding that proof of degree based on institution is provided to the employing institution Human Resources Office at least two weeks before the proposed start date.
**Note: Newly hired employees may be required to obtain and/or maintain certifications in American Red Cross, CPR/AED/First Aid and Blood Borne Pathogens and similar certifications.
