Under the supervision and direction of the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation for Facilities and Operations, the Coordinator for Facilities and Operations will serve on a team responsible for the daily operation and management of Campus Recreation facilities at Penn State University. Our flagship facility, the IM Building, is a 280,000 square-foot facility that recently underwent an amazing expansion and renovation to become one of the premier recreational facilities in the country. Campus Recreation is a department within the Division of Student Affairs that provides recreation and wellbeing programs to the campus community through the operation and administration of the following: IM Building, McCoy Natatorium, Stone Valley Outdoor Recreation Area, Tennis Center, White Building, Hepper Fitness Center, Outdoor Adventures, Aquatics, Club Sports, Fitness and Wellness Programs, and Intramural Sports. Campus Recreation is comprised of 53 full-time staff and more than 900 student staff members.
Job Responsibilities Include:
Assisting in the overall leadership of day-to-day operations and facility management of Campus Recreation facilities, with occasional support for projects and operations at White Building, Hepper Fitness Center, McCoy Natatorium, Tennis Center and Outdoor Fields.
Leadership and supervisory skills to select, supervise, motivate and evaluate student employees relative to work performance, crisis management, and peer relationships as demonstrated through past supervision of student staff.
Provide direct and/or indirect supervision to more than 140 student staff members including building supervisors, facility attendant leads and facility attendants.
Typically requires a Bachelor's degree or higher plus three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Master’s degree is preferred. This position requires a minimum of two years of experience managing collegiate recreational facilities with demonstrated experience in facility management and student staff supervision in a college/university setting. In addition, knowledge of basic safety and risk management practices as they relate to facility operations and management, as demonstrated through pastfacilities management experience. Knowledge of student development principles and an ability to provide formal and informal student development opportunities for student staff. Work schedule may include occasional evening and weekend hours.
This position requires independent work on assignments, while reviewing progress and updating the Assistant Director as appropriate. Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication (oral and written) skills are essential. Must be able to manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines. Attention to detail and good judgment are vital requirements. The successful candidate will have the willingness to lead and work in a team-based environment as well as an eagerness to support and engage with all departmental and Student Affairs initiatives and efforts. Required to take initiative and have flexibility to adapt to shifting workload demands. The ability to foster a positive climate among a diverse group of staff, student employees and participants is essential.
