The Assistant Director of Fitness Programs is responsible for overseeing group fitness experiences for Purdue Recreation and Wellness. These experiences include traditional group fitness classes, virtual group fitness classes, custom/private group fitness classes, instructional classes, and small group coaching. Additional duties for this position include personnel and fiscal management, policy and procedure development, inventory control, program development, and program promotion. This position will recruit, hire, train, develop, manage and evaluate part-time student employees. Conduct regular program and participant assessments to measure effectiveness and implement new initiatives based on industry trends. Develop and cultivate relationships with campus and non-campus constituents. This position will report to the Senior Assistant Director of Fitness & Special Programs. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
Duties & Responsibilities
Program Management. Responsible for overseeing a group fitness program with over 70 classes/week, 4,000 unique participants, and 40,000 annual participation that serves a diverse range of in-person and virtual users. Develop appropriate programming, policies, and procedures to ensure safe, inclusive, and customer-centric programs and services. Build class participation, conduct group fitness program assessment, and manage scheduling, payroll, inventory, and equipment replacement. Develop and implement regular assessments of the program to measure learning outcomes, development opportunities, customer satisfaction, and participation statistics. Create appropriate group fitness service options and packages and work collaboratively with other fitness staff and management team to determine appropriate fee structures. Create a vision and promotional strategies to inform current members and recruit new users. Research and recommend new trends, services, and operations. Assist in the development of premium group fitness classes such as boxing, women and weights, advanced yoga, paddleboard yoga, weightlifting, powerlifting, 1:1 yoga, etc. Oversee and manage all aspects of custom group fitness and a private instructor request program. This includes hiring, training, customer/instructor pairing, evaluating, and developing instructors. Design and facilitate customized classes to meet group requests and needs. Responsible for collaborating with outreach on promotional items and setting a clear vision for the group fitness program. Instruct a nationally accredited certified group fitness certification course in order to recruit new potential group fitness instructors.
Personnel Management. Supervise, manage, develop and evaluate a professional intern, student leads/program assistants, group fitness instructors as well as private instructors and small group coaches. Oversee and manage eight studios and nearly 15k square feet of group exercise space. This includes developing appropriate group fitness protocols for diverse populations and ensuring that student staff are properly trained on how to implement these procedures in their classes. Personnel management and development includes ensuring student staff are well versed in the vision, mission and policies of the department, the Division of Student Life, and the university; providing regular guidance and development opportunities in specific job tasks and personal and professional development areas. This individual will be responsible for implementing training(s) in order to ensure transformative fitness education/services while providing safe and inclusive options for all users.
Equipment/Planning. Responsible for researching, evaluating, and recommending innovative and appropriate group and private fitness classes equipment. Create and design appropriate group fitness studio equipment layouts and floor plans. Serve as department contact for group fitness equipment vendors. Work collaboratively with facilities staff to ensure that proper preventative maintenance and repairs are executed on group fitness equipment. Collaborate with Senior Assistant Director, Fitness & Special Programs on fitness equipment requests and the Facility/Maintenance staff on space requests.
Financial Oversight. Maintain a budget in accordance with department practices. Reconcile expenditures and ensure prudent stewardship of resources. Calculate, project, propose and manage the budget for group fitness (supplies, equipment, part-time staffing wages) and maintain appropriate inventory control procedures. Work collaboratively with senior staff and business office to regularly assess appropriate fee structures.
Collaboration/Campus Programming. Work collaboratively with members of the fitness, special programs, wellness, outreach, and other campus partners to develop and program wellness initiatives and programs for the entire university community. Assist in implementing and directing special events, workshops, and conferences. Aid in the development of group fitness, personal training, small group, and fitness/special programs outreach.
Other Duties. Collaborate and assist with departmental planning, policy development, implementation, evaluation, and special events as assigned by RecWell leadership. Serve on assigned departmental and University committees. Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in areas such as exercise science, sports management, kinesiology, health education, human performance or related fields. If in degree is in process, must be completed within one year of hire. Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in fitness programming, preferably in a college setting. Can consider professional internship and/or graduate assistantship experience.
Nationally Commission of Certifying Agencies (NCCA) group fitness certification. Additional certifications preferred, but not required.
Ability to independently manage all aspects of a comprehensive group fitness program. Must display ability to establish long and short-term goals consistent with the mission of the university and the department. Ability to design and manage programs to meet the needs of a large, multi-dimensional department. Must show ability to build, develop, and cultivate relationships across campus with a variety of constituents. Demonstrated ability to plan and implement employee training sessions and supervise a large student workforce. Successful candidates will be self-motivated, energetic, service-minded and adept at solving problems. Ability to work collaboratively with diverse constituents. Must possess strong communication (written/oral) as well as interpersonal skills. Proficient with computer software (word processing, spreadsheet, electronic communication, etc.).
