The University is currently looking for a Director of Recreation to lead an innovative unit that aids in supporting and promoting student well-being, engagement, progression, retention, and success.
Director of Recreation
Reporting to the Associate Vice President (AVP) for Enrollment and Student Affairs and Dean of Students (DOS), the Director of Recreation serves on the extended leadership team for the Division and serves as an active member of the AVP/DOS leadership team. The Director of Recreation is charged with providing an innovative vision and leadership to all areas of the Recreation department, which includes a comprehensive array of programs, facilities, and services. The position supervises approximately 9 full-time professional/administrative staff, 7 graduate assistants, and over 200 paraprofessional staff. The Director manages approximately 108,000 square feet in the HLS facility, 55,000 square feet of aquatic space, and schedules 55,000 square feet of the Field House. The position oversees a multiple funded source budget exceeding 1.7 million dollars.
Summary of Additional Duties:
Responsible for the department’s strategic planning, tactical completion of goals and objectives, and assessment/evaluation efforts.
Be a team player that collaborates with other on-campus departments and community agencies, as needed, to ensure goals, objectives, and directives of the department and university are achieved.
Creates, develops, and coordinates the planning and administration of facility operations and management.
Administers, develops, and implements programs and facility policies, procedures, and risk management practices.
Administer and oversee applicable budgets associated with the Recreation Department.
Works in partnership with divisional marketing to market department and programs.
Ensure that the department is providing optimal community/patron service.
Serve, as needed and assigned, on University committees, community committees, and organizations.
Weekend and after hours work is part of this job.
General on-call duties, as assigned by supervisor.
Master’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization (i.e., student affairs, recreation and leisure, sports management, etc.) and six years of appropriate experience; or a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and eight years of appropriate experience.
Knowledge of and experience with navigating campus recreation issues and implementing best practices
Knowledge of and experience with college student life and success issues
Knowledge of and experience with recreation facility operations and design issues and management
Knowledge of and experience with collegiate intramural and sport club programs and services
Knowledge of and experience with navigating critical issues in college/campus recreation risk management
Knowledge of and experience with assessing and evaluating collegiate recreation programs, facilities, and services.
Knowledge of and experience with budget planning and management.
Knowledge of and experience with leadership development and training principles and practices.
Knowledge of student development/learning theories.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Must be a team player, promote collaboration, and work cooperatively with others.
Significant experience in collegiate recreation programs and services.
Significant experience in collegiate recreation facilities.
Prior director level work experience in recreation or a related unit.
Experience working with healthy campus initiatives and partnering with wellness services/programs and/or units.
Substantial experience with assessment and evaluation of collegiate recreation programs.
Evidence of active engagement in professional association(s) associated with collegiate recreation and/or college students.
Track record of developing and implanting innovative and creative programs, policies, practices, and procedures to support and enhance collegiate recreation.
