In this dynamic role, the Outdoor Recreation Advisor is part of a team of outdoor educators that is responsible for advising Wisconsin Hoofer Clubs, Outdoor UW programming and operations, Outdoor UW projects and initiatives, and general organizational initiatives within the Wisconsin Union. The position will advise elected/appointed student leaders, paid staff, and contracted/hired technical instructors and coaches in supporting the mission of the clubs.
Located on the beautiful shore of Lake Mendota at the historic and iconic Memorial Union, Outdoor UW is the home of outdoor recreation and programming at UW-Madison. We serve our diverse community through offering rentals, clinics, workshops, (6) outdoor clubs, (5) competitive teams, an outdoor orientation program, and an environment of learning that recognizes and celebrates inclusivity and diversity.
The Division of Student Affairs at UW-Madison includes Recreational Sports, Student Life, University Health Services and The Wisconsin Union. Together these units deliver quality services and programs that enhance the student experience, build a welcoming and engaging community, and further student success.
Minimum type of relevant experience:
*1-3 years of experience in outdoor program administration, coordination, or graduate assistantship * 1-3 years of experience advising, leading, planning, or instructing a diversity of groups in risk management, trip planning, facilitation, budgeting, and administrative processes Wilderness First Responder Certified or willingness/ability to obtain * Demonstrated ability to commit to a work environment that is welcoming and respectful of everyone regardless of identity, background, interest, or ability * Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize and manage a number of disparate projects and priorities at one time * Passion and commitment to the field of outdoor education/recreation and its role in a community *Experience managing or processing contracts
Preferred type of relevant experience: * Demonstrated experience developmentally supervising or leading a team * Demonstrated experience teaching clinics, workshops, or trainings * Demonstrated experience presenting professional reports or presenting at conferences

Outdoor UW was created in 2013 as the Wisconsin Union opened up its renovated West Wing. It serves as UW-Madison's outlet to the
outdoors and houses an outdoor rentals operation for paddlecraft and camping equipment, Wisconsin Basecamp, an outdoor orientation
program for first year students, and the Wisconsin Hoofers outdoor clubs.
The Wisconsin Hoofers is the largest branch of Outdoor UW and consists of six separate clubs: Sailing, Ski & Snowboard, Outing,
(Horseback) Riding, Mountaineering, and SCUBA, as well as six teams (Sailing, Climbing, Equestrian, Alpine, Nordic, and Freestyle).
The clubs are o...verseen by Hoofer Council which is composed of a representative from each of the six clubs plus five elected executives
and six appointed officers. Each club is self-governing and administers its own program with funds generated completely from
membership dues, activity fees, and fundraising. The total Hoofer budget operates around $1.5 million.
