HealthFitness has an exciting new opportunity for a full-time (40 hours per week) Assistant Fitness Director at our Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) client site located in Cambridge, Massachusetts! In this position, you will be responsible for the overall recreation group exercise program, adult and youth specialty class programming, campus outreach programs, and you will function as the secondary facility manager of the Alumni Pool and Wang Fitness Center on campus. Your responsibilities include recruiting, training, and scheduling staff; managing daily operations of the fitness center and responding to patron needs; assisting during facility operations, rentals, and special events; assisting in the development, implementation, and evaluation of recreation, fitness and wellness programming; distribution of program marketing materials; collection of program and event data; and completion of regular reports.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Recruits, trains, supervises and evaluates group exercise instructors, specialty class instructors, and a part-time Group Exercise Manager.
Oversees instructor schedules and assignments (group exercise, adult and child specialty class programming, and outreach).
Oversees group exercise equipment maintenance, security, inventory, and organization.
Assists in updating and distributing operational and promotional materials to further develop a comprehensive fitness outreach program across campus including, but not limited to, the Residence Halls, Academic Departments, Student Organizations, Fraternities, Sororities and Independent Living Groups.
Assists in supervising the Personal Training and Facility Attendants at the Wang Fitness Center.
Distributes, collects, and analyzes program surveys.
Oversees the risk management of the program.
Instructs group exercise classes when necessary.
Opens/Closes facility as assigned and serves as POC (point of contact), 2nd Lifeguard, and conducts related administrative duties at the Alumni Pool and Wang Fitness Center.
Maintains visibility and a positive customer service image on the fitness center floor by dedicating a minimum of 5 hours per week to floor coverage and supervision.
Assists Assistant Member Services Director by reporting and managing patron comments and concerns as well as facility operations at the Alumni Pool and Wang Fitness Center.
Assists in week/weekend facility programs and events at both the Alumni Pool and Wang Fitness Center and the Zesiger Center.
Attends and actively participates in staff meetings and various committees.
Other duties as assigned by the Associate Director of Programs and Wellness.
Education, Experience & Certifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in exercise science, health education, sport management or related discipline.
Group Exercise Certification from ACE, ACSM, AFAA, or approved mind body or cycle certification as well as experience leading group exercise classes.
Current CPR for Professional Rescuer and First Aid Certification from the American Red Cross.
Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification or ability to complete within 90 days after date of hire (the cost required to uphold this certification will be covered by HealthFitness).
Strong knowledge in the area of health, fitness, fitness programming and wellness outreach.
Computer skills including Microsoft Excel, and Power Point.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, analytical skills, and quality customer service skills.
Master’s Degree in exercise science or related discipline.
Personal Training certification from ACE, ACSM, AFAA, NSCA, or NASM.
Experience in fitness testing and personal training.
Experience with public speaking/education classes, research and statistics classes.
