Position Expectations and Responsibilities:
This position will report to and work collaboratively with the Assistant Director, Club Sports & Development to develop, oversee, and administer a comprehensive and progressive club sports program that meets the demands of the university community while also promoting our mission. This individual will be expected to build, develop, and cultivate relationships with numerous division and campus constituents. They must stay abreast of local, regional, and national trends in club sports and club sports risk management and ensure that the department offers programs and services that are safe, inclusive, diverse, and educational. Some evening and weekend work is required.
Work collaboratively with and assist the Assistant Director with oversight and management of all aspects of a comprehensive club sports program to include: develop strategic goals and vision that support the department's and university's strategic plan and mission, develop and implement appropriate program policies and procedures to ensure safe, inclusive, educational, and customer driven programs and services. Work collaboratively with other department and university staff to develop and implement appropriate risk management protocols. Ensure that all clubs understand these protocols and expectations especially as related to travel, game management, and practices. Work collaboratively with department and other campus partners to develop and advance the club program. Work collaboratively with marketing and web site personnel to develop appropriate marketing and promotional strategies. Develop and implement regular program assessments to measure development opportunities, learning outcomes, customer satisfaction, and participation statistics.
Provide primary leadership for approximately 20 of our 30-35 club sports. Assist the Assistant Director with remaining clubs. Ensure that officers are well versed in the mission and policies of the club sports program, the department, and the university; provide leadership and training to students in areas of decision making, responsibility, communication, organizational skills, teamwork, and conflict resolution; provide on-going training, development, and evaluation. Conduct regular assessments to measure learning outcomes.
Hire, train, supervise and evaluate student club sport staff. Responsibilities for student staff include: administrative tasks, event & practice supervisors, peer mentorship of various clubs. Ensure student staff are well versed in the policies and mission of the department; train staff in risk management, communication, decision making, conflict resolution, and customer service. Provide on-going training and development opportunities through staff meetings and evaluations. Prepare, review, and submit hiring documents and manage proper payroll records and procedures. Ensure that staff learning outcomes are developed and associated assessment is conducted.
Work collaboratively with and assist the Assistant Director with developing recommendations for operating and personnel budgets for assigned areas. Maintain budgets in accordance with department practices and tolerances. Reconcile expenditures and ensure prudent stewardship of resources. Work collaboratively with business office to ensure that business functions employ "best practices" and are consistent with university standards. Maintain appropriate inventory control procedures for all program specific inventory.
Collaborate on and assist with departmental planning, policy development, implementation, and evaluation. Assist the Asst. Director, Sr. Associate Director and Director in the performance of non-scheduled work assignments upon notification and serve on assigned departmental and University committees.
One year of experience in recreation. A two year graduate assistantship will be considered as one year full-time experience.
Ability to manage all aspects of comprehensive club sports programming; Contribute to developing strategies and vision for a successful and innovative program
Ability to develop students’ leadership, communication, conflict resolution, organizational, and teamwork skills
Knowledge of risk management issues in collegiate club sports and recreation
Must show ability to build, develop, and cultivate relationships across campus with a variety of constituents
Demonstrated ability to supervise, manage, and develop student staff
Successful candidate will be self-motivated, energetic, service-minded and adept at solving problems
Ability to work collaboratively with diverse constituents; Must possess strong communication (written/oral) as well as interpersonal skills
Proficient at computer software (enterprise computing administration, word processing, spreadsheet, electronic communication, etc.)
Master’s degree in recreation/sport management, higher education, or related field
