The Department of Wellness is now seeking an experienced professional to lead its Fitness team in the position of Assistant Director of Fitness at Oklahoma State University. Our fitness program is one of the largest in the country with over 80 group fitness classes offered per week and a personal training staff of over 25 trainers. Our facilities include more than 350,000 total square feet including outdoor pool, 60,000 sq feet of weight and cardio space, multipurpose rooms, performance studio, indoor track, climbing/bouldering walls, high and low element challenge course, and over 15 acres of outdoor sports field. The Oklahoma State University Department of Wellness fitness program includes over 80 group fitness classes per week, F45, CrossFit, fitness special events, youth performance training, club sport training, general small group and 1-on-1 personal training services.
Our ideal candidate has a passion for providing exceptional customer service, experience in leading a large fitness program and staff to include full-time staff, Graduate Assistants, Personal Trainers, and Group Fitness Instructors. Applicants should have a minimum of 2 years of related experience and previous experience in overseeing a large fitness program. The Assistant Director is responsible for direct supervision of Two (2) Fitness Coordinators, and One (1) Graduate Assistant of Fitness. The work schedule is generally M-F, 8-5 with some nights and weekends as needed.
Responsibilities include:
Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Department of Wellness fitness program including Personal Training, Group Fitness, Specialty Small Group Training, and fitness specific special events.
Develop, plan, execute, and supervise all special programs and fitness specific events each year to include setting price points for various PT packages and registration for events.
Supervision to include hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluation of Two Fitness Coordinators, Graduate Assistant of Fitness, and oversight of student personal trainers, and group fitness instructors.
Facilitate all staff meetings and associated staff training.
Facilitate the “Fitness on the Go” program ensuring that appropriate spaces are reserved, instructors are scheduled and have the right equipment, and follow-up on billing for the class.
Responsible for development and maintenance of annual operating budget for fitness program.
Responsible for reserving space for classes, publication of schedules, and dissemination of information to marketing.
Oversee the registration and instruction of personal training instruction courses. Create and develop training materials for all staff.
Organize and host continuing education workshops and on-site certification workshops.
Oversee entering of biweekly payroll for Fitness positions.
Track unique participation, total participations in all programs.
In conjunction with the Associate Director and Facility Manager, obtain quotes and prepare bid specifications for all fitness equipment vendors for new cardio and strength equipment.
Required Job Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Recreation Management, Health Promotion or related field
Experience: Minimum of two (2) years professional, full-time experience administrating a large fitness program. Two years of a graduate assistantship will be considered equivalent to one year of professional experience.
Certifications: Current certifications in group exercise and/or personal training. Certification received through a national certifying agency (ACE, ACSM, NSCA, NASM, AFAA, etc.) Crossfit Level 1 within 90 days of hire.
Preferred Job Qualifications:
Education: Master's degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Recreation Management, Health Promotion or related field
Experience: 3-5 years professional, full-time experience administrating a fitness program housed within a collegiate recreational service setting strongly preferred. Previous experience supervising at least one full-time professional staff member. Current CPR/AED Instructor. Experience instructing a variety of fitness classes (ex. Yoga, Zumba, Strength and Conditioning, Bootcamps, HIIT, Cycling, etc.) One or more specialty certifications (Les Mills, USAW, CSCS, Beachbody, Etc…) preferred. Experience developing a large budget dependent upon revenue generation. Experience supervising large staffs. A strong background in risk management, especially as it relates to fitness and wellness programs, is preferred. Experience working with fitness vendors and equipment purchasing. Involvement within NIRSA.
Salary: Starting at $57,000
