Graduate Assistants are responsible for overseeing various aspects of UREC programs. They manage undergraduate student staff, including hiring, training, development, and evaluation. Graduate Assistants are highly involved in programming and facility aspects of UREC and are expected to collaborate with staff from all UREC program areas and several other departments on and off campus.
Contract: Minimum of 17.5 hours/week May – May (with option of a one-year renewal)
Compensation: $13.50 an hour; out-of-state fee waived (if approved by College of Graduate Studies).
Work Schedule: Five hours per work day (M - F) overlapping with supervisor and program areas. Also, weekends and nights as programming dictates.

Responsible Supervision: Provides guidance, leadership, or training to other employees.
Supervisor: Aaron Kentner, Assistant Director for Aquatics/Facility
Carries out recommendations of the Assistant Director of Aquatics/Facility Management.
Assists the Assistant Director of Aquatics/Facility Management with the day to day operations of Aquatics Program: this includes but is not limited to recruiting, hiring, training, assigning, monitoring, and evaluating personnel; assist with various in-service and risk management programs; conduct staff meetings; developing and administering schedules; recommend purchasing and inventory of equipment; and assisting with budget administration.
Gather data for comprehensive mid-year and end of the year participation reports.
Required to attend meetings requested by the Assistant Director of Aquatics/Facility Management.
Assist in the evaluation of programs, services, and personnel.
Assist with all departmental special events.
Participate in professional development at state, regional, and national levels.
Other duties as assigned.

Supervise and coordinate the following program areas: Outdoor Trips, Educational Clinics, Team Building Experiences, Indoor Rock Climbing Gym, Lake House Facility, Equipment Rental, and Experiential Leadership Course.
Assist in administering operations and events of Outdoor Adventures including: hiring, training, and scheduling student staff; marketing; event scheduling; and risk management.
Aid in the development and operationalization of policies for Outdoor Adventures.
Co-instruct outdoor trips and educational clinics ranging from day hikes to backpacking, rock climbing, mountain biking, or kayaking.
Help train student staff and trip leaders, coordinate group bookings, and facilitate groups for the Team Building Experiences programs.
Assist in the supervision of all rock climbing gym aspects including: route setting, risk management, equipment inspection, staffing, and gym environment.
Manage various participant demographic reporting methodologies and provide monthly trends on the participation of Outdoor Adventures’ programs.
Explore and express personal creativity as well as critical thinking skills for both program and personal growth.

Must be able to make decisions for everyday and emergency situations.
Ability to pass the belay test at the climbing gym within two months of start date.

Previous experience with experiential and adventure education-based programming.
Knowledge of Outdoor Adventures’ programs, policies, and operating structure.
Ability to effectively facilitate a diversity of groups through teambuilding activities.
Advanced experience with G Suite/Microsoft Office.
Sitting or standing for extended periods of time on a variety of surfaces.
Working alone or with other coworkers.
Climb ladders, rock wall, or outside surfaces. This may require being in a harness for extended periods of time.
Using approved climbing systems to belay participants.
Carry, push, or pull fifty pounds over short distances.
Ability to carry a backpack weighing 50 pounds, unsupported, for a minimum distance of five miles on varying terrain.
Participating or leading any activity OA facilitates (e.g. rock climbing, team building, kayaking, backpacking, etc.).
Exposure to various weather climates (e.g. rain, heat, snow, etc.).
Possible exposure, but not direct contact with public swimming chemicals.
Potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens while providing first aid.
