University Recreation at Mississippi State University is seeking qualified applicants for our Personal Training and Spirit Groups Graduate Assistantship position. The position is a 12-month position, 0.5 FTE, and the University provides a tuition waiver. Students are responsible for fees.
University Recreation encompasses Fitness, Spirit Groups, Competitive Sports, Outdoor Adventures, Aquatics and Facilities. Currently, the fitness department is expanding to offer diverse programming for our student body. The Personal Training and Spirit Group Graduate Assistant plays an integral role in the development of the both the fitness and spirit group programs as well as serving as a role model and mentor for students.
Current or entering, full-time graduate student at MSU
AFAA, ACE or comparable Personal Training certification desirable
Experience in personal training a wide variety of clients
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
Proficiency in written and oral communication skills and utilization of computers
Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments
Employee development and performance management skills
Ability to foster a positive, cooperative work environment
Ability to plan, organize, and implement promotional programs and events
Ability to comply with all policies and regulations of Mississippi State University and enforce policies that apply to University Recreation programs and services
Develop and implement a comprehensive fitness training program for members of co-ed cheerleading squad, all-girl cheerleading squad and dance team. This includes developing and supervising daily workouts, nutritional counseling and progress tracking of each individual member.
Assist in supervision and evaluation of personal training program and student fitness trainers.
Train and evaluate personal trainers, track clients and training package sales, develop staff trainings.
Insure that all fitness areas and programs are safely staffed and managed for efficient operation.
Organize and develop inservice meetings.
Insure that all facilities offer a safe environment; report equipment and facility repairs to Building Maintenance Supervisor.
Properly restock and purchase new equipment as needed.
Assist with planning, promotion and supervision of University Recreation events.
Participate in short and long term planning for all areas of department.
Be on-site and/or on-call on assigned evenings and weekends.
Other duties as requested by University Recreation professional staff.

Additional Salary Information: STIPEND: $12,681 for twelve months. The University will provide a tuition exemption of approximately 70% of assessed tuition and required fees. An exemption of 100% of the nonresident tuition/fee assessment will be provided to those not classified as a resident of Mississippi. Student will be responsible for the remaining balance of assessed tuition and required fees. Funding for professional development available.
